Betting money against time is a fool’s errand in life, as time always wins the last all-in. That said, legendary poker pro and The Lodge Room co-owner Doug Polk might have overvalued time in this instance. Betting $20,000 in a heads-up game against legendary comedy host and fellow motormouth ‘Kill Tony’ went badly, as Polk lost the bet. But playing double or nothing isn’t always a bad idea…

How the Heads-Up Match Took Place 1e731z

It was after a recent stand-up comedy gig that Doug Polk decided he was going to be a lot of his money for a minute of someone else’s time. Tony Hinchcliffe is an important man in comedy circles, hosting the legendary Kill Tony show, where of the public, along with special guests such as Kid Rock, Bill Maher and Tommy Pope gather to lay waste to all that isn’t funny.

It’s billed as the #1 live comedy podcast in the world and premieres each Monday at 8pm CST on YouTube, and the numbers stack up. With 2.25 million subscribers and a regular viewership of over 2 million on the channel, so getting a minute’s stand-up on the show has a big amount of value. To do so, your name has to be withdrawn from ‘the bucket’ on the show. There are also celebrity guests on the regular 2-3 hour streamed live show and each stand-up then chats to the as Tony Hinchcliffe trolls them.

With all that said, why would Doug Polk want to feature on Kill Tony? We know that Polk loves a side bet – he stands to win or lose six figures to Bill Perkins by way of his bodyfat percentage – but stand-up? Polk is no expert. It could be a very simple reason – ten times more exposure has a real-money worth of tens of thousands of dollars. Kill Tony’s subscriber base is four times that of Doug Polk, while each video on the KT YouTube channel is watched around 9-10 times more than Polk’s offering.

Those are some very large upticks to crack wise for.

How Did Polk Win His Minute on Stage? 21158

“Me versus the best in the world. Twenty minutes later, guess who won $20,000?”

As we said, usually, an appearance on Kill Tony is reliant on being drawn from the ‘Bucket of Destiny’ (although we’d question this given how prepared some comedians seem to be for their time slot). In this case, however, Polk won his way onto the show. So how? By playing heads-up poker, of course. After a recent gig, Polk approached Hinchcliffe and said that he’d bet him $20,000 in a heads-up poker game. If Hinchcliffe won, he could keep the money. If Polk won, he’d get a minute on stage during a Kill Tony show.

“There we were, at Mitzi’s [Comedy Club] after an episode, playing heads-up poker,” said Hinchcliffe. “Me versus the best in the world. Twenty minutes later, guess who won $20,000?”

Of course, the heads-up expert and three-time World Series of Poker bracelet holder… lost! At this point, Hinchcliffe could have cashed out but in a moment of stupidity… ahem, generosity, he offered the far more experienced poker player a chance at ‘double or nothing’.

With $40,000 of his own money on the line, Polk won the second heads-up match, and Hinchcliffe agreed to have the YouTube sensation and ClubWPT sensation on the show. When asked about the agreement on X, Polk was quick to confirm that it was a ‘napkin’ deal.

“We were 10 drinks deep at 3am,” he replied. “It wasn’t the most coherent negotiation.”

Body Fat or Belly Laughs? f52l

With a busy WSOP schedule coming up, Polk will be sitting with his finger on the viral video trigger through the 56th annual WSOP. All this while working on his 60-second comedy routine and shedding 50% of his current body fat? It’s a draining, non-stop lifestyle and one that has won Polk millions of fans around the world.

Delivering laughter to an audience of hundreds in a live venue at the same time as two million people are watching from home is a unique challenge, one that Polk has apparently been practicing for. The Lodge Card Club co-owner hasn’t cashed in a ranking poker tournament in 2025 but with over $10 million in live winnings and three WSOP bracelets – including winning $3.6m in the 2017 High Roller for One Drop – the Joe Rogan Comedy Mothership in Austin, Texas may prove pivotal in the next step of the poker legend’s career.

Polk may have gotten the last laugh in his meeting with Tony Hinchcliffe, escaping a $40,000 payout, but that minute in front of the microphone won’t be at the poker felt. It’ll be under hot lights in Hinchcliffe’s territory.

Maybe, just maybe, the host will ‘Kill Doug’ instead.
