Just as last year, the gambling capital of the world will welcome players to two classic poker venues on the Las Vegas Strip. Paris Casino and Horseshoe Las Vegas will play twin hosts to the action, with many of the largest-field events seeing Day 1s take place at Paris before Day 2s or final tables are hosted at the Horseshoe. Once again, CBS Sports will bring the WSOP Main Event to life on screen, with the world-famous ‘Thunderdome’ the ready-to-stream tv table under the lights at The Horseshoe.
In 2023, there were over 750 players who made their way to the Las Vegas Strip via online poker qualifiers on GGPoker. This year’s satellite schedule is so large that the global poker giant are hoping to send over a thousand players to Las Vegas to play in multiple tournaments as well as the big one itself – the WSOP Main Event, otherwise known as the World Championship.
This year’s 55th annual World Series of Poker will also see live satellites taking place at both venues, The Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Casino. The live, Vegas-based qualifiers take place between July 2 and 7 and will provide many seats into the early events right through to the annual WSOP Main Event, won last year by Atlanta, Georgia player Daniel Weinman.
“If you’re a poker player, there is simply no experience on earth like the World Series of Poker.”
This year’s theme for the World Series of Poker is ‘Bigger and Better’, as explained by the WSOP’s Senior Vice President and Executive Director, Ty Stewart.
“We’re proud to be Las Vegas’s original Main Event,” he said. “Records are made to be broken, so our motto this year is ‘Bigger and Better’. With our best schedule ever and more than 100 additional poker tables, we look forward to welcoming legends, first-timers and everyone in between. If you’re a poker player, there is simply no experience on earth like the World Series of Poker.”
Beginning on May 28, the World Series continues until July 17, and the 2024 WSOP Main costs $10,000 to enter, just as it has since 1972. There are four Day 1 flights, each starting 12 noon from July 3 and with two separate Day 2s, Day 2abc and Day 2d. That tells you that the WSOP is hoping to once again outstrip its previous best year. Until last year, over 8,700 players in 2006’s Series was the peak, but in 2023, an incredible 10,043 entrants smashed the previous record.
Just nine months ago, Daniel Weinman took home the biggest ever top prize of $12.1 million and with this year’s mammoth journey to a -presumably new – world champion over a fortnight long, the eyes of the poker world will be glued to the race to become the 2024 world champion between July 3 and 17, with the penultimate day playing from the final table to the last trio of hopefuls before a final day to find the winner.
While there is an obvious focus on quantity in 2024, the WSOP is also looking to add quality in all areas. Introducing new tournaments is always a popular way of doing this and there are a number of new offerings on this year’s schedule that are sure to tempt new players to make the pilgrimage to the poker capital of America.
As is often the case, newer events are introduced later in the schedule and Event #65, the $5,000 buy-in Seniors High Roller event, is just that. Both the Seniors and Super Seniors events are extremely popular with the biggest demographic of WSOP regulars and this is sure to be well-liked too.
Event #80, the Independence Day Celebration Event, is an $800-entry event that will likely see thousands take to the felt, while the Pot Limit Omaha Mystery Bounty Event #86 sees everyone start with a bounty on their heads. Event #89 is a fun one too, with the $3,000 buy-in rewarding Mid-Stakes players with a Championship event of their own, while Event #4, bucks the trend by going early with a $1,500-entry Mixed NLHE/PLO Double Board ‘Bomb Pot’ event. Expect fireworks.
The WSOP Main Event will fill a vast five-figure field, new events will welcome those looking for something different, but as ever, those classic ‘calendar’ events are all back on the 2024 WSOP Schedule. Costing $50,000 to take part in, the Poker Players Championship saw Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates win in both 2021 and 2022. At last year’s World Series of Poker, Brian Rast became the second three-time winner in the event’s history to win the $1.3 million top prize and was rewarded by his induction into the Poker Hall of Fame. The 2024 PPC is sure to be a corker.
There are lots of $10,000-entry Championship events, with Pot Limit Omaha (PLO), Razz and H.O.R.S.E. all variants that are presented at the high-level buy-in level. On the opening day of the 55th annual WSOP, the traditional curtain-raiser, the $500-entry Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em is actually Event #2 on the schedule, with a brand-new $5,000 buy-in ‘Champions Reunion’ event kicking off proceedings. Anyone who busts a former Main Event winner during the event will receive their 2024 WSOP Main Event entry in full – $10,000.
This year’s $1,000 buy-in Mystery Millions begins on May 30, with a spectacular $1 million guarantee and $1 million top bounty prize. The Colossus, Salute to Warriors and ‘Lucky 7’s’ events are all back on the schedule, as is the $25,000-entry Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship. Whoever wins that one will take bragging rights in the high-stakes world of elite poker too.
As the Danish poker legend once said when asked about the World Series of Poker, ‘It’s going to be a great summer!’
