Liv Boeree is both a highly relevant poker player and a throwback to a more innocent poker age. A former PokerStars Team Pro, the professional retired in 2019 after a meteoric rise to fame coincided with her most successful period of winning an EPT Main Event that shot her to stardom and a World Series of Poker bracelet in Las Vegas.
As a young woman, Olivia ‘Liv’ Boeree was a studious University graduate that became obsessed with science and metaphysics. A First Class Honours degree in Physics with Astrophysics at the University of Manchester came as Boeree branched into television. Winning over $8,000 on a game show on television in the UK, Boeree’s pursuit of glory in first UK then European poker events attracted attention from potential sponsors.
When an ash cloud threatened air travel in 2010, Boeree diverted her route home via San Remo in Italy in order to play the EPT Main Event. Incredibly, she then won the tournament for a stunning $1.68 million top prize. This victory catapulted her into British mainstream media’s consciousness, and she featured as one of five contestants in the reality TV show Ultimatepoker.com Showdown, where she was coached by top poker players Phil ‘The Poker Brat’ Hellmuth, Annie Duke, and Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott.
PokerStars snapped her up as a sponsored pro, making her a key member of Team Pro. Front and center in many adverts, Boeree became the de facto female ‘face’ of the brand alongside legends such as Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Selbst and Jason Mercier among others.
Playing guitar in heavy metal bands Dissonance and Nemhaim, Boeree garnered the nickname of the ‘Iron Maiden’ at the poker felt too. Modelling on the side, Boeree was the golden girl of poker, and won the Global Poker Index European Female Player of the Year on multiple occasions. She still ranks in the top dozen female players for live poker results in ranking tournaments.
Seven years after her success in San Remo, Boeree conquered the World Series of Poker, winning a WSOP bracelet for $273,964 with her Russian poker pro boyfriend Igor Kurganov. Two years later Boeree announced her departure from PokerStars in tandem with retiring from professional poker in order to pursue presenting and scientific pursuits. At the time of her leaving the profession of poker player, she was the only female player ever to win an EPT Main Event and WSOP bracelet.
